WHY NOW?

Global biodiversity loss and extinction rates are on an unprecedented upward trajectory [3]. We must ensure that we are raising a generation of environmental stewards that will choose to have a positive effect on the environment. The modern zoo no longer resembles the menageries of the past. These facilities have become leaders in environmental education and conservation initiatives [4]. We need to embrace them as such and use the tools that they provide to foster a sense of ecological empathy within our children.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

Most families do not have the resources to travel to exotic locals or participate in ecotourism, but many people do have the opportunity to take their children to places of environmental learning like a zoo, aquarium, or museum. As parents and educators alike, we must ensure that the learning opportunities are maximized on these outings. " Zoos can foster a culture of conservation; in fact, zoo-goers tend to show more environmental concern and care than the average person" [1]

WHY ME?

If not you, then who? Studies show a strong correlation between environmental learning through family discussion, experiences, and social norms and pro-environmental concern and behavior [2]. Your kids are watching your every move. We need to demonstrate how to be ecologically responsible individuals, and we must push our children to explore unknowns, use the scientific method, respect nature, and ultimately "be the change that you wish to see in the world" ― Mahatma Gandhi.
