WHO WE ARE
We are a community of parents that also have careers in zoological fields. We have witnessed first hand the multitude of children that feel little environmental impact from a day at the zoo. We want to give parents the tools to ensure their zoo or aquarium trips help cultivate empathy and conservation caring in their children. Together we can grow the environmental stewards of tomorrow!
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY KIDS LOVE ANIMALS, BUT THEY ARE CONFLICTED ABOUT THE ROLE ZOOS PLAY IN CONSERVATION?
This is an instance in which preparing before a trip to the zoo can be helpful. Many zoological institutions play a huge role in various conservation programs through research, partnerships, and fundraising. You should check out your local zoo's website to learn more about their conservation contributions and environmental learning opportunities. See some examples here
SHOULD I SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY AND PARTAKE IN THE SPECIAL EXPERIENCES OFFERED AT THE ZOO?
If it is within your means, we highly recommend participating in outreach programs that are of interest to your children. However, you do not need to spend loads of money to give your kids a unique experience. Look for daily animal encounters, tours, feedings, or keeper talks that are available to the general public.
ARE THERE TIMES OR DAYS THAT ARE CONDUCIVE TO OBSERVING NATURAL ANIMAL BEHAVIOR?
Absolutely! If possible, arrive when the zoo opens as that is when many animals are being fed their breakfasts and starting their daily routines. Many animals tend to sleep during the hottest parts of the day. If your zoo offers later hours during the summer months, be sure to go observe the behaviors of the nocturnal species during the evening. Also, we recommend visiting on weekdays, if possible, as less commotion often leads to more natural animal behaviors.
